]]>Placencia to Mango Creek (15 minute boat ride)
Mango Creek to Belmopan (3 hours)
Belmopan to Benque Viejo del Carmen (2 hours)
Cross Guatemalan Border
Melchor to Tikal (3 Hours)
Tikal To Santa Elena (1 1/2 Hours)
Santa Elena to Guatemala City (11 hours)
Guatemala City to Panajachel (4 hours)
We were meant to spend some time in Tikal ( or atleast the night) but there was no affordable rooms left by the time we got there. We paid for a really expensive room, and after going up the pyramids we decided it wasnt worth staying. Do not get me wrong Tikal was AMAZING. The pyramids were awe inspiring. We ended up going back and asking for our money back and leaving to take the night bus to Guate from santa Elena. This bus ride was the most uncomfortable bus ride I have ever been on. There was a fairly large man that was sitting in front of me, who put his chair back to the point that my knees were supporting his whole entire body weight. Then he proceeded to put his child on his lap. I could not move my legs for eleven hours. When we got off the bus I had such a bad muscle cramp. Though it fully sucked, it was an experience to say the least. From Guate we took a chicken bus to Panajachel (the market town on Lago de Atitlan) So I am now sitting here in Pana looking forward to tomorrow and the day of shopping. Email me with present specifications (wink wink GREG) Anywhoo I will be home in 7 days. Love everyone

]]>Wednesday was our last day at Casa Guatemala. It was kind of sad to leave, but I also felt that since our project was done it was time to go. I have decided that I am for sure coming back to Casa at some point in the near future though. It was hard to leave the kids. Kaya had a really hard time leaving lisa, one of the girls she had a great bond with. Lisa is an older girl, who has a mild disability. She is contantly tormented by the other kids and called loca (crazy) Lisa retalliation to this is an attention seeking one where she calls everyone names. On our last day lisa just was huggin kaya and gave her kisses. After some of the volunteers came ver and said they have never seen Lisa that way. After our goodbye with the kids it was volunteer night at the hotel, so we had our goodbye party. It was also really hard to leave the volunteers. We bacame very close to them as well. I do not think one month is enough time to spend at casa, because you are just getting to know everyone when you leave.
This morning we woke up bright and early to say goodbye to Emily Lindsay and Danielle. It was a mildly tearful goodbye, but happy too. Kaya and I took a 2 hour minibus (the size of christy adams van) filled with 16 people to Puerto Barrios, and from Puerto Barrios we crossed the belize border into punta gorda by boat. It was one of the most uncomfortable boat ride ever!!! From Punta Gorda we took a 2 hour bus to Independance and from Independance a 15 minute boat ride to Placencia. After a long day of travelling we finally made it to this small creolle penninsula of Belize. It is amazing. The way people speak is crazy. It is like english but not. One of the signs on the beach reads
sho yur luv fo' di bare foot dem no throw trash in a fo' we sand
The people of belize seem much friendlier and it is more of a relaxed attitude. I love it. Anywhoo my time is up again. You will hear from me next in Tikal, Guatemala
Peace out

]]>On to happier subjects. I just had one of the most amazing weekends of my life (thanks Lennox McKneely our Casa Guatemala Sponser) We went to Denny´s Beach, a touristy area on lago izabel. It was gorgeous. We stayed in Lennox´s amazing house, ate amazing food and got to wakeboard! I am in paradise right now. I would also like to add that everything is worked out with Angie at this point, and Jeffe as well. We finished work on the Clinic on Friday. This is exciting news because the clinic is now almost finished. All that is left to do is plumbing. We have another 3 days at Casa Guatemala in which I am hoping to attend some classes. Upcoming schedual includes a trip to Placencia, Belize on thursday which should be amazing. I love you all and miss you.

]]>So i have just finished my first work week at Casa Guatemala. It was really awesome, but I have to admit I am a wee bit homesick. I actually considered giving up and coming home way early, but i thought I should stick it out. Anywhoo we have worked for only three days and are utterly exhausted. The first day we only painted but we painted in a small enclosed room for 4 hours. Not only were we painting in the small room, where the paint got to our head and we made silly songs, but we were painting planks of wood that would become the ceiling. It was so incredibly monotonous, but the other girls were with me wich made it bearable. The next day Cat and I got to start putting up the boards and make a small part of the ceiling. It was really hard to hammer the nails upwards, and also we had to hand saw all the peices. Today was my favourite work day. Most of the girls were put on the task of putting in the walls to the bathroom in the medical clinic. We also finally got electricity routed to the clinic so we didnt need to hand saw anymore; thank god! it was really hard work, but time went by really fast. we are working with two really funny guys named Hector and Ermando. there is quite a big language barrier, but they are funny. When we were painting they were working underneath the clinica and we could hear them making fun of us talking andgigling in really high pitched voices. It was hilarious.
As for the Casa, the kids are really cute. There is one girl Diana that came and tucked ME into bed last night because she knew i was tired. She is six years old, but can already speak a little english. The other kids are great also. We are sleeping in the same building as the girls, which kinda sucks becasue they get up at 4 in the morning. It isnt so bad though becasue breakfast is at 6 and we start work by 7. The other hard part at being at the orphanage is that we have some kinds of bugs, we think gnats, that live in out beds with us. They dnt bite, but they hop around all night which gets kinda annoying. Also the electricity goes off at 8:30 so everything after that is by candelight... ARGH. But other than that it is great. There are monkeys that live around the orphanage, which sound like rabid dogs, it was kinda scary the first night. We saw some today and one peed on kaya! It was funny.
Another thing i have found quite odd is how much Casa G reminds me of Keats. The kids line up for breakfast every meal and are let in, and the whole place is run kind of like a summer camp. There is a little tienda that is like the mariners in, and the kids live in bunk beds and have one volunteer that works with them. The whole atmosphere of the place is much like keats.
I have also managed not to get sick yet...YAY
Miss home lots,
Char

]]>So i am sitting here in the little internet area at the Hotel Backpackers, which is operated by casa guatemala. We arrived in guatemala city yesterday, and stayed in a cute little hostel called the hotel fenix. There was a fairly big language barrier, and we were relying on my broken spanish along with lindsays broken spanish. We took a wander through the city and ended up at a protest in the city center. After observing that we went for dinner. We hadnt eaten since the night before with mom, yet i still wasnt that hungry. <we decided to be inside our hostel once it was dark becasue Guatemala city is a fairly skechy place. I fell asleep fairly early and ended up waking up to the sound of a massive truck driving by and honking its horn. that meant i was awake or most of the night. We took a bus from Guatemala City to Rio Dulce today, and tehre was this guy in frfont of me who kept telling me things about the areas we were driving through. Only problem was that I could barely understand him. We got off the bus and had to walk from the bridge to the backpackers with our backpacks and supply bags which weighed like a billion pounds. I hope everything is good on the home front. It is getting close to dinner time and my time limit is almost up.

]]> So this is my first entry into the Casa Guatemala blog! We are currently in the process of getting all our stuff together. We are still looking for womens clothing, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and other types of personal hygeine products. So if anyone feels the need to donate some, give me a shout!
It seems crazy that we are leaving so soon! Emily and Cat leave on tuesday morning, then Danielle, Kaya, Lindsay, and I are heading out on May 7. Anywhoo only two more weeks to go, and i am starting to feel the anxiety. Sorry for the short post, but life is busy! Have a good week!
